United Methodist Women's Day

United Methodist Women's Day

Sunday, January 27th was United Methodist Women’s Day and was celebrated with Rev. Debbie Gara preaching and most of our attendees wearing red in the UMW’s honor. Rev. Gara is a lifelong United Methodist and the daughter of a United Methodist pastor Rev. Rex Britt. She received a Master of Religious Education from Claremont School of Theology and has been an ordained Deacon since 1998. She served as Associate Pastor for many years at Aldersgate UMC in Tustin and then most recently served at First UMC in Pasadena.

UMW Cross.jpgEach year the UMW selects people who have done outstanding work for our church and community. During the service Jeanette Ham presented the UMW Special Mission Recognition Awards to individuals for their outstanding mission service. The first recipient was a talented woman with a caring heart, Ruth White-Worden. Ruth has taken her time and energy for more than 25 years to sew more than one thousand Prayer Bears which our pastors give when making pastoral care visits to our members who are in the hospital. What a wonderful and tangible give of love from Ruth.

Our 2nd recipient was Ron Morell, one of those people serving behind the scenes, fixing things that break, and sprucing up the church campus. Ron participates in the church missions and community organizations such as delivering Meals on Wheels several times a month, helps with Common Ground, and is also willing to help with rummage sales, picking up heavy donations and getting supplies. How could we manage without Ron’s help? For these reasons and more we also recognize Ron with a honorary UMW membership.

Our third and last honoree was one of our youth – Allison Garcia. Allie is 17 years old and has grown up here at Foothills. As an active member of the youth group, she has served as a Summer Camp counselor, worked with Store Front for the past three years, served as a Sunday School teacher for the past four years, and has shared her faith journey as a speaker at one of our Ash Wednesday services as well as at a Women at the Well. UMW is proud to recognize Allie for making a difference in her church and community.
