Campus Happenings: July Edition

Campus Happenings: July Edition

By: Kathy Morrison, Board of Trustees Chair

In July, exciting and new things are going to be happening to our King Hall Connection Center and Conference Room. Many of you have asked Board of Trustees members why the flooring was not replaced when King Hall Connection Center was remodeled, and that question was addressed by the Board of Trustees earlier this year. As some of you may have heard, new carpeting is scheduled for both rooms – exciting, yes!

Unfortunately, there are some safety concerns that need to be addressed first. During our research for new flooring, three separate companies informed the Board of Trustees that under our very old, used, and abused carpet there is asbestos in the original floor covering – not to worry. Up to this point everything has been safe since the original flooring is under our old carpet. However, there are signs of wear and tear on the carpet and the middle section of the parquet “dance floor”, that in the near future could expose the original flooring.

The Board of Trustees wants to take a safety first approach to the matter and has elected to remove the carpeting from both rooms, the stage, and the parquet “dance floor”. Both rooms will be fully abated by removing the old original vinyl floor tiles and using a bead blast technique, which includes diamond-grinding the edges, to remove the mastic. The “entryway” parquet floor in front of the sliding glass doors will be sanded, stained, and sealed after the asbestos abatement.

So, what does all this mean to the congregation and the staff? It means the King Hall Connection Center and Conference Room will be closed from June 29th to August 1st and that on Sunday, August 2nd, 2015, King Hall Connection Center and Conference Room will truly have a new, clean, and bright look! In addition, the offices occupied by Carol Paton, Linda Cree, and Marge Woods will temporarily be moved during the first three weeks in July.

So, how can you help? Here are just a few of ways:
Helpers are needed in the following areas:

  • Everything needs to come out of both rooms and moved to a portable storage unit that will be placed in the staff parking lot and then returned back after the flooring is replaced
  • Help is needed to remove the stage
  • Painters will be needed – some wall painting and baseboards
  • Workers to help install the new baseboards in both rooms
  • Financial Resources: if you could help us finance this project, please let Linda Cree know, or on your check in the memo line indicate “King Connect Flooring”

Let us know how you can help. Please give the church office a call at 619-670-4009, let a Board of Trustee member know, or contact me directly at gkmusc@cox.net or 619.460.3309.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and in anticipation of your willingness to help, I thank you! This is a BIG project and we truly need Your Help!
