Day 7: Taking it All In
Week I Theme: Coming Home to God
This first seven days of devotion have been stirring the pot about our thoughts and feelings related to God. Notice the title of this first week is "Coming Home to God." It is not "Going before God's Throne" or "Defining God for the Modern Age." The God we find in the person and teachings of Jesus is not one that is ever defined with clear sharp edges, nor is it a God of domination and distance. "Coming Home" is intended to conjure up the image of a loving family.
On Day I, we reflected on the eternal nature of God; on Day II, the ever present nature of God; on Day III, the God who becomes real in the person of Jesus Christ; on Day IV, the difficulty we have seeing God when we are self-focused; on Day V, the loving nature of God; and on Day VI, the Bible as a guidebook to a right relationship with God. It is a lot to take in. If it seems overwhelming or confusing, that's OK. The goal is not to get it all figured out; the goal is to enjoy the daily process of adding to what we understand, and increasing our sense of a personal relationship with God. This is a lifelong process.
I often share this illustration by my friend, Rev. Luat Tron Tran, regarding a person's relationship with God. Rev. Tran said; "My life to God is like a bucket to the ocean. A bucket cannot contain the entire ocean, but it can be filled by it." You know, I don't think I have a single relationship in my life completely figured out, but that doesn't stop me from wanting to grow closer in my relationship with my wife, my sons, my daughter-in-law, and yes, my God.
Prayer:
Spirit of God, fill me with your presence. Amen.
Reflection Questions:
What obstacles do you feel are still standing in the way of risking a deeper relationship with God?
What is one more step you can take to deepen your sense of God's presence with you?
