EarthCare at Foothills

If we learn to love the earth, we will find labyrinths, gardens, fountains and precious jewels! A whole new world will open itself to us. We will discover what it means to be truly alive.

--St. Teresa of Avila (1515-1582)

As Christians we value the sacredness of God’s creation and every individual who walks this earth. This translates into how we strive to be good stewards of God's earth through our responsible actions. At Foothills we have created several environments to help empower adults and children to make a difference. Click here for important Earthcare tips!

Foothills' environmental groups

Roots and Shoots Environmental Youth Program For Kids Aged 7 - 13 Years

Roots & Shoots meets every other Sunday at 11:45 am in the James Room or in our Community Peace Garden, which is located above our upper parking lot. Children of all faith backgrounds are welcome! Check out our upcoming events for this month (updated monthly)

May Roots and Shoots meet dates will be 5/13 and 5/27

The roots & shoots program is about making positive change happen -- for our communities, for animals and for the environment. We were inspired to begin a Roots & Shoots group at Foothills after Dr. Jane Goodall, UN Messenger of Peace, gave a lecture at Foothills in 2008. For more information on the national Roots and Shoots campaign, please visit www.rootsandshoots.org.

Foothills' congregation and trustees efforts are also taking conscious actions to reduce our carbon footprint by:

  • implementing water-saving landscaping
  • purchasing recycled paper towels for our dispensers
  • implementing a recycling program on our church campus
  • being a part of Earthkeepers, an Interfaith network of creation care ministries. Check out sdearthkeepers.org

A Fair Trade City

La Mesa, California has been listed as a fair trade city. The idea being that as a community we do all that is possible through word and hopefully action to reinforce the concept of fair trade of goods. You can find information on this pivotal movement here.

Foothills is also honored to be listed as a fair trade location on their map of La Mesa. We stand behind the fair trade ethos and do what we can to buy fair. Our United Methodist Women group also sells fair trade coffee during their fundraisers.
