"Foothills United Methodist Church is a community in Christ:
loving, growing, reaching out to the world."
InterFaith Shelter
InterFaith Shelter is an annual opportunity to help house homeless in our community. For two weeks in the winter we provide food, shelter, and training for individuals and families who have no place to live. The need for volunteer help for this ministry is high and because of volunteers we've been able to provide this important ministry for several years. Look for information about this in November and December as we serve our neighbors in the new year.
La Roca School and Leadership Center
Every third Saturday of the month, a team from Foothills goes to La Roca in Tijuana, Mexico. We meet in the lower parking lot at 7:00 a.m. and usually return by 2:00 p.m. While at La Roca, the team helps this ministry of Tijuana by: building classrooms, repairing computers, performing general maintenance, providing arts and crafts for the children, or playing basketball and soccer with the older youth. This is a great opportunity to help our brothers and sisters in Mexico. Along with support from a team every month, Foothills collects food, clothing and other resources weekly that help support those who live in the community near La Roca.
Common Ground Collaborative
Common Ground Collaborative is an interdenominational outreach effort of three churches - Santa Sophia Catholic Church, Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church and Foothills United Methodist Church. The Collaborative has adopted elementary schools in the La Mesa/Spring Valley area and serves a broad spectrum of needs including providing volunteers in the classroom, emergency family needs of food or clothing, and facilitating each student having a personal library at home. Volunteering in the classroom is a great contribution to a child's life, providing both support in their education, but also a compassionate adult role model. There is much more we do, and much more we hope to do in the future. Contact the church office if you’d like to volunteer or provide resources for this ministry to the students and their families in this community.
Good Neighbor Center (GNC)
Our continual support of METRO, the United Methodist urban outreach center, is a ministry that we provide to help programs in the San Diego area. The GNC at Chollas View UMC has a storefront and a “People-to-People” food program. Foothills accepts donations of clothing and food and supports volunteers to help with the distribution of goods as well as administration and organization of the outreach facility.
Family Mission Teams
The creation of this ministry is grounded in strengthening the bonds between God and families at Foothills. Teams from Foothills work together to find places of need and organize work projects for a week of work, to travel and fellowship together. Families grow strong bonds between each other while also growing in faith. As they work and worship side-by-side, they help bring the Kingdom of God to places of need.
Missionaries
We provide support for three missionaries through the General Board of Global Ministries. Our missionaries serve Mexico, Germany and Russia.
Project Moses (Books for Babies)
Foothills provides infant bassinets for families who lack a crib or bassinette, reducing chances of infant role-over deaths. Donations of fabric and laundry baskets are taken by volunteers who create beautiful and safe bassinettes for new families identified by local hospitals. We also provide books for babies that have been donated and added to this gift of life for newborns.
El Nido
Foothills provides items for two units at an apartment complex that houses mothers and their children who have been victims of abuse. Before a family moves in, volunteers prepare a two-bedroom and one-bedroom unit by cleaning, setting up furniture, and providing basic necessities for self-sufficient living. By providing a clean and safe environment for these families, they are able to begin the process of healing and become healthy and independent family units once again.
Meals-on-Wheels
This program provides meals to over 1,200 San Diego County seniors each day. Over 50 of our Foothills’ church members participate in this program by delivering two meals daily, covering two entire routes (there are 65 routes in San Diego) and offering financial assistance through donations. Foothills is proud to have served Meals-on-Wheels for over 15 years. We are always looking for volunteers for delivery and administrative assistance.
Kairos Prison Ministries
Foothills offers two ways to minister to those in our community who are incarcerated. Kairos Ministries provides opportunities for men to go into Donovan Prison and be a witness of Christ’s love, introducing the Bible and Jesus to many men. At Las Colinas Women’s Facility, Foothills provides books to enhance the prison library.
District MissionTeams
Volunteers participate with other United Methodists in work projects throughout the country and internationally. Most recently our projects have focused on storm and earthquake relief. Each team is organized through the San Diego District of The United Methodist Church and is often supported by United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).
Fund Raising
Rummage Sale
Each year the Missions Ministry Team collect resalable goods from Foothills' church members and host a community-wide rummage sale in the spring (the week following Easter). All money raised goes to Mission projects.
Alternative Christmas
Shoppers assist needy families around the world by donating to sponsored organizations and purchasing gifts in honor of someone on their Christmas list. The lucky recipient is given an Alternative Christmas card announcing the gift. Unique gift opportunities from around the world are offered at our sale that occurs early November each year. It’s a great way to have your gift giving reach even further and make a difference in the world as well as the individual who receives it.
