Lenten Series: Prayer Practices
Wednesdays, 6:30 pm in King Hall
4 Sessions, Beginning March 20
Led by Pastor Lori Doyle
This time together will include discussions on topics such as prayer as a spiritual discipline, prayer as a means of Grace, praying with the Scriptures and learning our own prayer language. Although there is no text required for the class, bringing your Bible and a spiral notebook and pen/pencil will be helpful. If writing is difficult, the class will still offer much to consider, since it is above all experiential. There will be opportunities for participants to share their own experiences with prayer, and on one evening, Denise Serino will share her experience using the Scriptures in her time of prayer.
The class is designed for all who desire to explore more deeply the experience of prayer; beginners and experienced, all sinners and saints, those who pray without ceasing, and those who have ceased to pray.
Entering the Passion of Jesus
6 week video led small group, beginning March 3
2 Class options: Sundays at 4 pm or Tuesdays at 10 am in the Disciple Room
Led by Larry Ledford
Jesus’ final days were full of risk. Every move he made was filled with anticipation, danger, and the potential for great loss or great reward. Jesus risked his reputation when he entered Jerusalem in a victory parade. He risked his life when he dared to teach in the Temple. His followers risked everything when they left behind their homes, or anointed him with costly perfume. We take risks as we read and re-read these stories, finding new meanings and new challenges. In Entering the Passion of Jesus: A Beginner’s Guide to Holy Week, author, professor, and biblical scholar Amy-Jill Levine explores the biblical texts surrounding the Passion story. She shows us how the text raises ethical and spiritual questions for the reader, and how we all face risk in our Christian experience. Entering the Passion of Jesus provides a rich and challenging learning experience for small groups and individual readers alike.
