Common Ground Christmas

Common Ground Christmas

By: Mike Eulitt

For over 20 years, Common Ground has supported children and families in six elementary schools in the Spring Valley area by providing classroom volunteers, distributing free books to kids, hosting teas and luncheons, providing Christmas gifts for kids, packing food boxes for families facing food insecurity, building bikes for kids, and addressing emergency needs for families. The pandemic has disrupted some of our activities but buoyed by the generosity of our donors, we have found alternative ways to support our school communities during these challenging times as their needs are even greater than they have been in years past.

One of the most beloved Common Ground traditions has been providing presents for parents to give to their children at Christmas and we had hoped to revive that tradition this year. Unfortunately, several of our schools have experienced reductions in their support staff who in the past have helped identify the needs, gather all of the information from the families, and make the ornaments for us to hang on our Christmas tree for churchgoers to select. This time-consuming task is just too much for the schools this year.

The schools have requested Target gift cards this year in lieu of actual presents so that parents could purchase gifts for their children. To date, the schools have nominated over 140 children to receive gifts and as you might expect, this represents a significant upfront cost for Common Ground that is shared by Shepherd of the Valley and Santa Sophia. However, we remain committed to providing for the children in our schools who might not otherwise have their Christmas wishes fulfilled.

We are asking that those who might have considered picking a child’s name off the tree this year instead make a contribution to Common Ground that we would then use to purchase Target gift cards that we would deliver to the families so they could purchase gifts for their children. We invite you to donate to Common Ground to help us in this mission. You may submit donations to the church office or donate online at the Foothills website.
