FOUNDRY UMC - Spreading the Good News with tents, floats and golf clubs
Starting a new church in East Chula Vista has been a learning experience for all of us. We have been open for more than seven months now, and we’ve discovered that reaching God’s people these days takes creativity and a willingness to break old habits.
More often than not, Pastor Christian’s meetings with members take place in a coffee shop or elsewhere in the community, rather than in his FOUNDRY office. Spiritual discussions do happen in our sanctuary on Sunday mornings – but they also happen at the local EastLake Tavern+Bowl, or while setting up tents at the community camp-out. What’s really exciting? These unique ways of meeting South Bay families are working! Slowly, but surely, we are growing FOUNDRY’s congregation by extending invitations to those we encounter throughout the week.
In that spirit, here are some upcoming FOUNDRY activities:
Birdies, Bogeys & Books – It’s not too early to get your foursome together to play in the FOUNDRY golf tournament on September 22 at EastLake Country Club. This is the third year that Foothills and FOUNDRY family members have enjoyed each others’ company (and maybe a little healthy rivalry) out on the links. Start speaking to your friends and family members about playing this year and supporting not only FOUNDRY, but also our co-sponsor; the Chula Vista Public Library Foundation. Pastor Christian serves on the board of this organization and has established a great connection between our church and the new library that has opened in Otay Ranch Town Center. The tournament will be followed by a banquet with live music and a silent auction. Please email email@example.com if you can donate items for the silent auction or would like information about the tournament.
Coffee With The Pastor – On the fourth Wednesday morning and Thursday evening of each month, Pastor Christian meets with people in the community at Cool Down Coffee near FOUNDRY. We have found that this is an ideal, non-threatening way for people to learn about the church and its pastor. It is also an opportunity for our members to “be known” by FOUNDRY leaders. And as an added bonus – Pastor Christian is buying the coffee!
FOUNDRY Friday Movie Nights in the Park - On July 26, we will continue our community tradition by showing the movie, Diary of a Wimpy Kid 3 and extending hospitality at Montevalle Recreation Center. Setting up the movie, speakers and snack bar takes many hands. If you would like to help out, we would certainly appreciate the help. Set-up begins at 6:30p.m. If you can’t be there that early, feel free to come at 8p.m. join the 200 or more other people who set up picnic blankets and enjoy a free movie!
Family Picnic in the Park – Foothills members and FOUNDRY members had a great time in July getting together at Scobee Park sharing games and root beer floats. FOUNDRY will host another picnic on August 4 and all those who enjoyed the first one are encouraged to bring a new friend along this time. We realize it can be intimidating to invite someone to a Sunday morning worship service; but who doesn’t enjoy a good water balloon toss in the park? It’s a wonderful opportunity to build relationships that God can use to grow the church.
Theology on Tap – July’s Theology on Tap meeting was our largest gathering yet at EastLake Tavern+Bowl. Pastor Christian bought appetizers for new participants and people were able to share their ideas on faith and God. The conversation and good times will happen again on August 1 at 6:30p.m.
Finally, you are invited to join us any Sunday morning at 10a.m. for worship. We are located at 861 Harold Place in Chula Vista and there are always open seats for you and your family. We may employ some non-traditional methods to reach others, and we might not look like a typical church building, but God is doing great things at FOUNDRY. Come see for yourself!
