Interfaith Shelter Network in 2021
By: Carolyn Wietzel
Many of you have been wondering how Interfaith Shelter Network is going to minister to our homeless neighbors this year during the pandemic. After an update meeting from the ISN county organization last week, we have some answers for you.
Although a very limited number of congregations are going to continue with the same model of hosting guests at their own facilities, most congregations are not doing that this year with the health challenges which we face. Our model has always been to serve guests with potluck food, to share meals together, and often to have guests stay in rooms with people who are not members of their own household. We decided early in the fall that this would not work for Foothills.
As an alternative, the county ISN has started and is continuing to develop resources in the San Diego area hotel sector to house guests. In large measure this year, guests will be staying in various contracted hotels, receiving packaged meals, and getting transportation furnished by the shelter organization. Just for your information, the cost of the hotels contracted ranges from $79 to $100 per night. So far, this arrangement has worked well in the southern section of the county, so the organization is exploring more hotels in San Diego and East County as the fall and winter weather begins.
This year, Foothills will be sending any donations received through Celebrate Christmas or separately to this county-wide effort. Please consider a generous contribution to this worthwhile ministry.
