El Nido Housing Update

El Nido Housing Update

By: Rev. Christian DeMent

Did you know that Foothills sponsors an apartment in the El Nido Housing Complex?
El Nido is an apartment complex owned and run by the Interfaith Shelter Network, the same people who organize the Interfaith Shelter that we host for two weeks every year. Foothills sponsors Apartment #1; a two bedroom apartment, for women and their children who have been in abusive relationships and need a safe place to recover and get back on their feet. The Interfaith Shelter Network provides programs and assistance for the mothers and their children, providing education, training, childcare and work resources.

Currently, the small apartment #1 houses a mother and her four children. Mom shares a room with her 4 year old daughter, while two daughters (10 & 15), and a son (8), share the other room. They expect to be in the apartment through December of this year.

Mom attends Mid-city adult school ESL and works three days out of the week cleaning a house. One daughter attends Clairemont High, the two children are currently in Euclid Elementary, and the toddler goes to daycare. Mom has put her name on three waiting lists for low income housing.

Foothills did a great job of providing houseware and other goods to the family before they moved in. When a family moves out they are allowed to take whatever they need to get a head start on their new independent housing. When the apartment is in transition, Foothills will come back in to refurnish the apartment with everything that the next family will need to live and recover comfortably.
