Seven Little Words

Seven Little Words

By: La Donna Chase

I had just finished getting my hair done in La Mesa and was heading home. Turning onto University Avenue my car started hesitating and chugging down the street and I knew I’d better find some place to pull over, but I was stuck in a left turn lane. I made the turn with the car acting like a bucking bronco. I could find no place to pull over…all I saw was red curb. Then my car just completely died. I was sitting in the right lane of traffic and the car was totally dead; even my emergency flashers didn’t work. I started to panic thinking I might get rear-ended. I finally calmed down enough to remember that I have towing insurance. I reached for my phone while cars are honking as they go around me. One older man in a big truck stops next to my car and rolls down his window. Help has arrived! He yells at me “get off the (expletive) phone” and drives off. If I wasn’t in such a panic I would have laughed out loud (which I was able to do later). The towing company said it would be at least an hour before the truck would be able to get there; I’m at a loss as to what to do. “Be still and know that I am God” came to mind, but I thought, 'unless God can come down from heaven and push my car, I’m in trouble.'  Just about then a thirty-something young man with long, stringy hair and his mother in his car stopped behind me. He walked up and says seven little words that made everything alright: “ARE YOU OKAY? HOW CAN I HELP?”

Long story short, he pushed my car backwards onto the sidewalk where there happened to be an unused driveway. My car fit perfectly. Joshua 1:5b “I will not fail you or forsake you.” (I guess God does know how to push a car)! God is so good as was the guardian angel he sent me. “For he will give his angels charge of you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.” Psalms 91:11-12.

God did indeed send me a flesh and blood angel! I felt so surrounded by God’s love during the hour and a half it took for the tow truck to get there. The tow company kept calling me to see if I was doing okay or needed anything and to give me updates about what was happening. Even the tow truck driver himself called me! Ninety minutes later my car was at the mechanic getting a new alternator and battery. Joshua 1:9b tells us: “Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” He certainly was that day.

Heavenly Father, thank you for being there for us even when our faith fails us. Thank you for guardian angels. Amen.
