Volunteers in Medicine

Volunteers in Medicine is celebrating a “Decade of Caring” this year. Dr. Garry Bradt, since deceased, a member of Foothills UMC with Dr. Gresham Baynes worked on organizing this local chapter for three years prior to accepting patients. It is located on the grounds of the Chapel of the Valley UMC. This clinic has more than 100 volunteers including doctors, nurses and office staff. Currently, we have over 3,000 appointments a year. We serve working people that cannot afford any other type of health care. Our expenses include a CEO, lab work and drugs.

I was initially approached by Dr. Bradt to help financially. I have been a big supporter ever since. Drs. Sandy Jasmin and David Polster, from Foothills, are also avid volunteers of the program.

I think many of us are closer than we might imagine to facing health care challenges. We are all God’s children and need to care for each other. We recently held our first fundraising event. We had about 80 supporters come to celebrate with us. Among them was the Grossmont Health Care board members. They have been our biggest supporters for many years because they feel we meet a need and keep many people out of the emergency rooms.

I would love to answer any questions you may have. We are always looking for more volunteers because some of our volunteers only work a few hours a week. Contact me at 619-887-5501 if you feel called or compelled to assist in this mission.
