What Are You Going to Do?

By: Steve Hable
Yeah, but what are you going to do?
The Urban Dictionary credits Homer Simpson with the above phrase. They state the phrase is generally used where a situation doesn’t typically favor one’s way and they are either powerless or too lazy to do anything about it. There are lots of variations, but they all generally mean the same thing. It’s a statement we hear and often use. It’s a demand or a challenge for somebody else to do something to help.
As adults, children often come to us looking for help because they lack the experience or knowledge to meet an instantaneous need. They look to us to fix toys, correct homework and soothe feelings over strained relationships. As they get older they discover they have the ability to solve many problems on their own. In business circles, we have customers/clients, supervisors and employees that want to know what we are going to do for them because they feel powerless to solve an issue. We step up and deliver what they are looking to accomplish. Often times, the roles are reversed and we are the one that needs for somebody to take care of our problems.
Unfortunately, many times nothing happens and the problem remains. We can become complacent and leave it up to someone else to be the problem solver or just decide we don’t possess the ability or the will to resolve the issue. We decide there is little we can do about homelessness, hunger and discrimination because we don’t have the resources. We have all of the resources we need…..we are a Christian community. Being a Christian requires faith, study and ACTION. There are ample opportunities to serve.
Yeah, but what are you going to do?
